Hi Taneya
Great site, I also have family ties in Lenoir County and have been researching and putting togeather my maternal Whitfield tree togeather for about a year now. Interesting I found my great grandfather Haywood Whitfield in the the 1910 , 1920 and 1930 census with his wife and family (my grandfather, greataunt, greatuncle) as well as his WW1 Draft registration card but cannot find any record of him prior to that . Although his name is Henry Haywood Whitfield I have found him listed as Howard , Harvey, Henry and Haywood. When I found your Kinston Free Press Blog I suscribed right away. North Carolina has great resources but limited when it comes to African American. I have been more sucessful with my great grandmother's line finding her in the census with her mother and father an great aunts and uncles in the 1900 census. Thank You for sharing

Very interesting. I haven't explored any other sites other than Ancestry and FamilySearch. I'm going to have to take a look at Footnote.

One thing I have learned is to call RIGHT AWAY when you find distant leads..... don't wait another day! Not many of the folks I need to talk with, are alive any longer -- and I dithered about calling my father's second cousin too long -- he passed away within a 10-month time span from when I located him, until when I cold called. there was real potential there, but I just did not make it a priority until it was too late. He died childless, too, so I can only imagine what happened to his books, photos, letters etc. I could just shoot myself!

[...] I have just sent off an article that will be published in a Alabama genealogy newsletter. More details to come once that is published. I’m quite excited about it! Then, last week I received an email from Nita, one of my original blogging inspirations, about her Koonce ancestry. She has an offhand feeling she may have connections to North Carolina where my Koonce’s are from, so we will see what happens there. It would be so cool to have another connection with a geneablogger as I do with Jennifer.
Taneya,

You do WONDERFUL work!
I was reading through old comments from one of my blogs and noticed a comment that you had posted. Sorry, I missed that one. You shared that your maiden name is Koonce! As you noticed, my maternal g-grandmother's surname is the same. Their location was in Texas. I believe Lavaca, Tex. We just might BE cousins! Do you have any information concerning that side of the family that you can share? I would love to hear from you.

My email address is enclosed.

Hi. This is really interesting.

I am from the Geaorgia and/or Indiana McNairs. James Daniel McNair was my grandfather. I believe he was born in the late 1800s. Might you have any information on him or his line?

Thanks so much!

Wow. I'll have to check out that website. When I go to Pasquotank in August, I plan on taking pictures of the cemetary down there. I'll have to post my pictures to that website. My county isn't a popular one researched by African Americans.
